About National Urban Combat Academy

Coastal Dragons Dojos is based on the Sunshine Coast in beautiful South East Queensland. Our SMART Urban Combat System was created as a means of providing self defence training to meet today's needs. At the foundation of our style are techniques from Okinawan Goju Ryu and Zen Do Kai as well as Brazilian Jui Jitsu and Muay Thai. The system was created as a result of an obvious need for a street system as opposed to a sports style martial art.

Only techniques that are tried and proven have been included in the NUCA style. The NUCA training curriculum has been put together as a holistic system using techniques from various different martial arts styles.

No longer does a student need to be “cross training” to get exposure to a variety of styles. The purpose of creating the NUCA system was to develop a combined maratial arts system that was truly holistic and could be used in practical street situations rather than the controlled environment of many sports based styles. A system whereby a student could learn a technique today and use it today. With many styles, it takes literally years to gain any level of competence.  NUCA is about providing the student with the necessary skills they need to help them manage almost every possible situation.

A Combined Martial Art provides the ability to fight in a variety of environments such as stand up or on the ground, in confined spaces or even in the dark is only part of what NUCA can offer. NUCA also teaches students the use of a variety of common weapons and the defence of them as well. NUCA has an emphasis on the many other benefits a student gets from studying martial arts, such as poise, balance, self control, flexibility, co-ordination and of course self confidence and fitness.

The core instructor body assembled by Coastal Dragons literally have years of experience. Some have Black Belts in several styles and have spend decades as qualified instructions having taught people from all walks of life such as Police Officers, Ambulance Officers, Security Guards, Prison Guards, Body Guards and Army Personnel just to mention a few. Most of our Instructors have had fight careers either in the security industry or in the ring. Our instructors are all First Aid trained and all have “Working with Children” Blue Cards.

NUCA is a community minded body with an emphasis on “putting something back” into the community. We offer free training session courses to emergency service officers to help arm those people (that put their lives on the line for us everyday), with an arsenal of tools they are able to use to defend themselves and anyone else in harms way.

Coastal Dragons Dojos was established on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland in April 2000 and originally operated as a Bob Jones Zen Do Kai club for 13 years before converting across to the NUCA system. Our Founder, (Grant Rohde) moved to the Sunshine Coast in December 1999 as a Black Belt Instructor in Zen Do Kai Freestyle Karate and BJC Muay Thai, under the late Kyoshi Steve Dickens from Shibumi Samurai in Toowoomba. National Urban Combat Academy (NUCA) was formed in April 2010. Urban Combat Systems was progressively created over a 3 year period and released by NUCA in March 2013.

NUCA Gradings

In a NUCA class, students are divided into groups according to their experience, each group identified by the wearing of different coloured belts.

Brand new students wear a white belt before progressing to orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, novice brown, brown, advanced brown and finally probationary black with a white strip before grading for full 1st degree Black Belt.

Gradings are held to give students the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned at class and to progress to the next level. It is important for students to experience a feeling of "elevation" and a sense of achievement. These are held 3 times per year at regular intervals throughout the year.  Students attempt a grading when they and their instructor believes they are ready to progress to the next level, working their way through the levels at their own pace.

After successfully completing a grading students receive the next level belt and a certificate of achievement.

When grading, the essence is in competing against yourself...that is, to better your last performance, to over come fear, apprehension and indecision and to display commitment and effort. It is these elements that ultimately see the students reach their goals.

Little Dragons

LIttle Dragons - Kid's Classes

Coastal Dragons Dojos welcome kids into our class. We believe that kids are the warriors of the future and that the earlier they start the better.

We teach kids of all ages in our open class environment. We are convinced that after teaching kids this way for the past 15 years that they get more benefit from training amongst adults than they do training only with other children.

Our kids learn discipline and respect for adults while at the same time we arm them with the knowledge that stranger can mean danger and how to deal with situations if approached by adults.

Kids get great satisfaction from being able to train with their parents or older siblings and this helps to encourage family bonding in an activity where everyone can get involved and get fit while learning practical self defence skills that may one day save them from serious harm. We believe in the theory "a family that kicks together, sticks together".

We also believe that kids that have an active involvement with martial arts, grow to be well respected people. They seem to do better in later life both personally and professionally. They are far less prone to being bullied by others and are very rarely involved with bullying activities. They generally develop enough confidence and self respect that they have no interest in picking on other people and as they develop a persona of self confidence, they are not often picked on themselves.

Martial Arts also constantly gives kids something new to strive for as the next belt is always more challenging and demanding than the last. Kids involved in Coastal Dragons Dojos Martial Arts are taught the fundamentals of surviving life and becoming a well respected member of society.

They are taught to understand our core principals:

Everyone Works for the success they acquire.

Everyone Pays their own way.

Everyone Starts at the bottom and works their way up.

In real life, you dont get medals for participation.
